The Steve Banahan, Sr. Award is given annually to the outstanding Fayette County Democrat who best exemplifies personal sacrifice, initiative, dependability, and enthusiasm benefiting the Democratic Party. The late Mr. Banahan entered Fayette County politics as a precinct worker in 1918, served as a local contact for former Governor Bert T. Combs from 1959-1963, and ended his career serving as the Chair of the Fayette County Democratic Party from 1964-1972. Upon his retirement as Chair of the Fayette County Democratic Party, the Fayette County Democratic Party instituted the annual Steve Banahan, Sr. Award to be awarded to the outstanding Fayette County Democrat of that year.
The Louie Mack Award is given annually to recognize exceptional contributions, potential, and vision of Fayette County Democrats who are between the ages of 18 and 35 years. Mr. Mack was a teacher, educator and administrator in the Fayette County Public School System for 33 years, retiring as an Assistant Superintendent in 1982. Upon his retirement, he served the citizens of Fayette County in the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1984-1992. His intellect, forthright nature, work ethic and smile earned him many honors and awards, including the 1993 Steve Banahan, Sr. Award. In honor of his life and accomplishments, the Fayette County Democratic Party unanimously voted to institute the annual Louie Mack Next Generation Award.
